The prospect of a new ministry specializing on research and development that will also include university-level education was mentioned by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday, during a chat with BioInnovation Greece co-founder Nikos Kyrpidis at the Bio3 Forum 2025.
Such a ministry would be considered following the next elections, government sources clarified.
At the Forum, Mitsotakis said the purpose would be to consolidate research activities, while noting that Greece should permanently allocate funding for research in its annual state budget, with strict criteria on effectiveness of funding. He also spoke of a new emerging sector, that of using technological innovation in the defense sector, and cited the newly founded Hellenic Center for Defence Innovation SA (HCDI).
Greeks working abroad can contribute very high value to their homeland, the premier also noted, citing the example of many Greek professors at 100 of the top US universities. "Therefore, there is an intellectual potential that under certain circumstances could prove very useful to Greece, especially in sectors like artificial intelligence, as well as in the biosciences. We truly have leading personalities in academia as well as in industry," Mitsotakis said.
