Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the director and global head of safety for Meta Antigone Davis, along with other company executives, on Friday at the Maximos Mansion.
The Meta delegation reiterated the company’s full support for Greece’s proposal to establish a single digital age of majority in the European Union, under which parental consent would be required for minors to access digital services, including social media.
At the meeting also recognized Greece’s leading role in the European debate on protecting children and adolescents from inappropriate content and the risk of digital addiction.
Mitsotakis emphasised that children's protection from internet addiction and the dangers of the digital world are key issues. He also noted that he had addressed the issue at the UN to highlight the importance of a global response to the issue.
Mitsotakis and Davis also discussed the parental control and age verification capabilities offered by the Greek Kids Wallet application, which was presented at the European Union level and has received significant support.
Addressing Mitsotakis, Davis acknowledged his and the government's leadership in the development of a system that enables age verification.#She also agreed that age verification should be implemented at the operating system or device level and said she appreciates the leadership approach taken by Greece.
Davis also noted that Meta supports a digital coming-of-age model, which should be linked to parental consent, and stressed the importance of ensuring children can use such tools safely.#She added that Meta recently launched Teen Accounts to provide appropriate default settings and safeguards for teenagers.#The meeting was also attended by Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou and Minister of State Akis Skertsos.
