Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be among the leaders attending the MED9 Leaders' Summit taking place at Portorož in Slovenia on Monday. The meeting will focus mainly on the latest developments in the Middle East, as well as European competitiveness and fiscal issues, with King Abdullah II of Jordan attending.

It will be the first meeting held by EU leaders in the days immediately after the Middle East peace agreement signed at Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and comes just days before next week's European Council meeting in Brussels.

Mitsotakis is expected to emphasise the importance of cooperation between the European countries of the Mediterranean in tackling challenges such as the climate crisis, which requires more action to adapt to a greater frequency of natural disasters. He is also expected to talk about the 5X5 initiative announced in the Hellenic Parliament regarding a meeting of coastal countries of the region that will include Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Turkiye and Libya - countries that face common challenges and could work together in handling issues such as migration, protection of the marine environment, connectivity, the demarcation of maritime zones and civil protection.
