A total of 308,000 inactive students were removed from public university registries, fulfilling a promise, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a social media post on Friday.
"In 2025, for the first time, we implemented our promise to remove hundreds of thousands of perpetual students from university registries. To be specific, 308,000 so-called students, phantom students, were removed from university registries," Mitsotakis said.
The premier added that there were currently no classroom sit-ins at universities, commenting, "We are finishing with a decades-long practice that had tormented Greek public universities, and moving into a new era." He provided photographs of the Aristotle University Law School's cafeteria before-and-after pictures, which has become a new science library. "This is the image of public universities we want and fight for. The year 2025 was a good one for public universities, and 2026 will be an even better one," the premier concluded.
