The working-class port town of Perama, west of Piraeus, plans to pay €1,000 for every child born to a family registered there, regardless of income, Mayor Yiannis Lagoudakos has announced.

The benefit applies to every new child, not just the first, and will be funded from the municipality's own budget for 2027, the city said.

Mr. Lagoudakos said the town has secured the money.

The measure is meant to support young families and, in a small way, address Greece's demographic problem. Births fell to 66,532 last year, the lowest since 2013, and are projected near 65,000 this year.

Mr. Lagoudakos criticized the central government. A law now lets municipalities give financial help for newborns, he said, but it came without matching state funding.

"Central government established the possibility for municipalities to provide subsidies for new births without accompanying the measure with the necessary funding," he said.

Perama joins a growing list of towns offering baby bonuses. Souli, in northwestern Greece, pays €1,000 for every child born from January 2026, and Corinth won approval last month for a similar payment, though only for families meeting income criteria.

Such local schemes have sometimes been delayed by legal review, as happened to Agrafa, whose benefit was held up at the Court of Audit.

The state also pays a birth grant of €2,400 to €3,500, depending on the number of children, to mothers with family income of up to €40,000.

The town also pointed to a gap in its official numbers.

Of about 50,000 people it says live in Perama, only 26,000 are registered there, a gap that can affect funding and services.

The benefit is limited to registered residents, which the mayor may hope will encourage people to register.
