The European Parliament's resolution expressing concern over the rule of law in Greece drew stinging criticism directed at the government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from opposition PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis on Thursday.

He noted that it was "shameful, for the first time after 1981 and our country's accession to the European Union, for a government to embarrass our country in such a way."

According to Androulakis, the resolution was "a clear message from the European institutions to the government of Mr. Mitsotakis, which has done damage to the institutions, human rights and the separation of the powers."

"The phone-tapping scandal, in which the heads of the armed forces and political figures were under surveillance, is not a ghost. The cover-up of the phone-tapping scandal, when the protagonists of this sordid affair are currently posing as sports officials and representatives of the prime minister, is no ghost. The tragedy at Tempi, which cost the lives of 57 of our fellow human beings and the effort to cover this up is no ghost. We experience it daily at the investigating committee. The attacks on the heads of independent authorities, something unprecedented in the annals of our country, are not ghosts," he said.

Replying to those suggesting that anti-Greek sentiments were behind the MEPs resolution, he pointed out that it had not been proposed by left or centre-left parties, but by the liberals that included the party of Emmanuel Macron, and had been passed with the horizontal support of centre-left, left, green, liberal and even some MEPs in the European Peoples' Party (EPP) group, which included New Democracy.
