Panathinaikos BC owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos has been banned from entering sports venues for 10 months and fined 20,000 euros ($21,700) for actions deemed to have damaged the image of Greek basketball.
The disciplinary ruling follows an incident during the second game of the league finals against archrival Olympiakos on June 1.
The ban, effective immediately, was issued by the league’s sports judge who cited "repeated conduct that defames the sport."
This means Mr. Giannakopoulos will not be allowed to attend Game 3 at OAKA, or a potential Game 5 if the finals series continues.
In addition to the personal sanction against Mr. Giannakopoulos, Panathinaikos BC itself was fined 44,000 euros ($47,700) for his actions during the heated encounter at Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF).
Further disciplinary actions were handed down, with head coach Ergin Ataman receiving a written reprimand and a 5,000 euro ($5,400) fine for post-game comments that were found to have defamed the sport.
Guard Kostas Sloukas was fined 1,100 euros ($1,200) for inappropriate behavior toward a referee. Players Mathias Lessort and Ioannis Papapetrou were cleared of similar accusations regarding referee and fan interactions, respectively.
The rulings come amid rising tensions in the Greek league finals between longtime rivals Panathinaikos and Olympiakos.
