The historic Panathenaic Stadium is set for a major renovation sponsored by Olympiacos Football Club president Mr. Evangelos Marinakis, with the goal of hosting international track and field events by 2026.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) is leading the initiative. HOC president Mr. Isidoros Kouvelos recently finalized the agreement with Mr. Marinakis.
A meeting was also held with Minister of Culture Mrs. Lina Mendoni to secure the necessary approval from the Archaeological Service for the project.
Renovations will include installing new track lanes and upgrading the stadium’s lighting. Due to the venue's unique layout, it will be able to host sprint and jumping events.
The Greek Athletics Federation (SEGAS) has been briefed on the plan.
The Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 B.C. and rebuilt for the 1896 Olympics, is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon. The renovation is part of a broader effort by the HOC to upgrade key sports facilities in Greece.
