A large wildfire raging through eastern and southern Attica has killed one person, destroyed homes, and forced the evacuation of at least 14 communities, as strong winds continued to fan the flames into Saturday morning.
Firefighters discovered the body of a 76-year-old man inside his burned home in the Togani area of Keratea, where the fire began Friday afternoon.
Authorities have issued evacuation orders for more than a dozen settlements, with the most intense fire fronts burning in the coastal areas of Palaia Fokaia and Thymari.
More than 260 firefighters, supported by 77 vehicles and numerous volunteers, are battling the blaze.
Police have closed several major roads in the area, including parts of Lavriou Avenue, as the fire remains out of control.
