Brent crude skyrocketed nearly 20% to reach $111.04 per barrel—its highest level since July 2022. Concurrently, West Texas Intermediate hit $106.17.
The massive price spike is driven by severe supply fears as U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran paralyze commercial shipping through the critical Middle Eastern chokepoint.
With oil sustainably breaching the critical $100 threshold, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his administration are now cleared to activate proven crisis measures. Authorities are rapidly preparing to reinstate the Fuel Pass, Power Pass, and targeted inflation rebates to buffer citizens from soaring energy and consumer goods costs.
The crisis is simultaneously reshaping continental economic policy. Greek Finance Minister Kostis Pierrakakis is leading emergency discussions at today’s Eurogroup summit. Mr. Pierrakakis is prioritizing immediate interventions to combat the energy shocks, advocating for the temporary suspension of European spending caps.
The move would allow member states to fund domestic aid without facing strict EU deficit penalties.
Market analysts warn that crude could persist above the $100 mark for the foreseeable future if the maritime blockade extends for another five weeks, threatening to severely destabilize European budgets.
