A sophisticated traffic camera system will be fully activated in the coming days to enforce red-light violations at major Athens intersections, the Ministry of Transport has said.
This measure directly targets a leading cause of traffic accidents in the country.
Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis stated that an initial eight cameras are already in place for a pilot run, with a total of 388 planned for intersections identified as high-risk for accidents and violations.
The cameras are equipped with high-resolution sensors and advanced software, enabling them to detect vehicles with 99% accuracy in all light conditions.
Upon detecting a violation, the system captures five photographs and transmits the encrypted data to a central violation management server. The Hellenic Police will have exclusive access to this server for verification.
Following confirmation of a violation, the system automatically generates a fine and delivers it to the vehicle owner’s digital inbox on the gov.gr portal. A violations registry will also be created to track repeat offenders.
The updated traffic code stipulates a €700 fine and a 60-day license suspension for running a red light. The penalty increases to €1,000 and a 180-day suspension for a second offense within five years, and to €2,000 and a one-year suspension for a third offense.
The government anticipates this initiative will lead to a marked improvement in road safety.
