A newly constructed bridge on the Greek island of Kefalonia is drawing widespread praise for its breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea, just weeks after opening to traffic. The rebuilt Chimonikou Bridge significantly enhances road safety and accessibility, offering a major infrastructure upgrade for the island.
The new bridge, inaugurated in May by Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Christos Dimas, replaces a structure that collapsed during Cyclone Ianos in September 2020. Its completion is seen as a crucial improvement, also expected to boost the island’s tourism appeal.
Videos showcasing the bridge have gone viral on social media, including a clip posted by a foreign tourist that has garnered tens of thousands of views and hundreds of positive comments.
The footage highlights the uninterrupted sea views visible from the new structure, which connects the villages of Divarata and Argostoli via the provincial road network.
The new steel-and-concrete single-span bridge measures 25 meters (about 82 feet) in length and features six main beams, each 1.2 meters (about 4 feet) high.
It replaces a 1970s-era bridge that had been built next to a still-standing World War II structure erected by German forces in 1942.
Local officials and residents have widely welcomed the project, which also included road improvements along the Divarata–Agonas–Argostoli route.
The upgrades aim to enhance daily mobility for residents and professionals while increasing road resilience to future extreme weather events.
Alongside the nearby Harakas Bridge, the Chimonikou Bridge forms part of a broader effort to strengthen vital transportation links in Kefalonia.
Authorities say both projects will play a central role in the island’s long-term development, particularly by supporting tourism and connecting the north of the island to its capital, Argostoli, and the southern region.
