A new mobile application has been launched in Greece that allows citizens to report marine pollution in real time using their smartphones, helping authorities respond more quickly to environmental threats.
The app, now available to the public, enables users to take and upload photos of pollution incidents, such as litter on a beach or a spill in the sea.
The images are then automatically sent to an AI-supported database for smart categorization and analysis.
The digital platform was developed by the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos.”
The initiative is part of a broader European program called Interreg IPA ADRION Prevent, which aims to develop innovative tools to combat marine litter.
The app empowers the public to play an active role in protecting Greece's marine ecosystem by turning individual observations into actionable data.
