A Greek nephrologist has disclosed that the same Kolonaki clinic where singer Giorgos Mazonakis suffered fatal cardiac arrest previously administered multiple plasmapheresis sessions to a 35-year-old Cypriot woman who later required hospitalization, raising new questions about the clinic's history of unlicensed treatments.

Christos Iatrou told state broadcaster ERTnews he learned of the case from the head of the pathology clinic at Hygeia Hospital, where the woman was treated after her plasmapheresis sessions at the Kolonaki practice roughly a year ago. Mr. Iatrou said her father had paid tens of thousands of euros for the treatments.

Mr. Iatrou said he was told the Athens Medical Association had been informally notified about the case and conducted an inspection — matching the 2025 inspection previously disclosed by the association — but found no plasmapheresis equipment on-site at the time. He added that the device was never registered with the association, and that a Greek distributor for the Swiss manufacturer operates out of Thessaloniki.

Mr. Iatrou said no scientific studies support plasmapheresis as an anti-aging or longevity treatment, noting that therapeutic use requires a documented illness and follows specific criteria set by the American Society for Apheresis.

He said the procedure should only be performed in hospitals with the proper equipment and trained teams, whether public or in major private medical centers.

Athens Medical Association President Giorgos Patoulis has separately said plasmapheresis is legally performed only at three public hospitals in Attica, calling its use at the private Kolonaki clinic an illegal medical act.
