Nearly half of Greeks will not take a summer vacation this year because of the cost, with soaring accommodation prices cited as the primary barrier, according to a national poll released by Alco research firm.
The survey, broadcast on Alpha TV, found that 47 percent of respondents cannot afford a summer holiday — a four percentage point rise from last year — while the share planning a vacation has fallen to 44 percent from 49 percent previously.
Among those forgoing travel, 76 percent blamed prohibitive accommodation rates and 74 percent cited broader cost-of-living pressures and household inflation.
Rising transport and food costs were also widely cited.
Financial strain is reshaping the plans of those who are traveling.
While most expect to maintain their usual trip duration, 21 percent said they will cut their holidays short. Nearly half of those planning to travel — 46 percent — intend to stay in their own properties or with relatives rather than pay for accommodation, while 37 percent plan to book hotels.
Short-term rentals such as Airbnb accounted for just 12 percent.
The findings reflect deep domestic economic pessimism.
Forty-seven percent of respondents said their personal financial situation has deteriorated over the past year; only 7 percent reported an improvement.
The poll also captured public anxiety over regional security. Greeks remain closely divided on the risk of escalation with Turkey in the Aegean, with 44 percent expressing concern and 46 percent saying they feel secure — a near-even split that underlines the persistent undercurrent of geopolitical unease in Greek public opinion.
