Two thousand eight hundred seventy-nine (2,879) World War II shells were collected on Wednesday morning from the sea area of the port of Kavala by a special team from the Navy’s Underwater Demolition Command.
According to the Coast Guard, the ammunition was transported to a safe marine area in Tsari Bay, where it was neutralized in a controlled explosion.
This followed the discovery of ammunition (11 rounds and a magazine) in the same area on July 25.
