A new one-room primary school is set to open on the remote island of Pserimos this fall, ensuring its two first-grade students can continue their education without leaving home.
The school was established for two children who recently graduated from the island's kindergarten, which opened in 2023.
Without it, they would have had to commute to the neighboring island of Kalymnos for their elementary education. The two schools will share a building.
The initiative is part of a government effort to support families in remote areas.
"No child on any remote Greek island will be left without education," said Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki.
She described small islands like Pserimos, home to just five families, as "national lighthouses" that must be kept shining.
A new teacher will be assigned to the primary school at the start of the school year.
The classroom is already equipped with interactive whiteboards and a computer, with logistical support provided by the Municipality of Kalymnos.
The island's kindergarten teacher will mentor the new arrival
