The family of Marissa Laimou, a Greek woman who died suddenly in London, is awaiting final autopsy results as a preliminary investigation suggests she died from sepsis possibly triggered by an insect bite.
According to forensic pathologists, the insect bite may have allowed a streptococcus bacteria to enter her bloodstream, leading to a fatal infection.
An investigation is now underway to determine if the antibiotic she was given in the hospital was appropriate for the specific bacteria and to review her overall medical treatment for any potential errors.
"We were told the infection likely came from the insect bite through two puncture marks," a family member said.
"The critical issue is whether the antibiotic she received was effective."
Two weeks after her death, the family of Ms. Laimou remains in shock and is unable to finalize funeral arrangements until the official cause of death is confirmed.
"Her parents are devastated… They lost their beloved daughter in one day. From an insect bite? They cannot believe it," the family said.
