Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece expects an upcoming visit by President Donald Trump and voiced support for U.S.-led diplomacy aimed at easing tensions with Iran.
Speaking to Breitbart News on the sidelines of the Delphi Economic Forum, Mr. Mitsotakis said relations between Athens and Washington have “never been closer” and described Greece as a stable ally at a time of sharp regional uncertainty.
Mr. Mitsotakis said a deal between the United States and Iran could help restore stability and calm energy markets, though he stressed that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a priority.
He said current efforts should focus on diplomacy and de-escalation rather than confrontation.
The prime minister also said Greece is pursuing greater energy autonomy through natural gas exploration with U.S. companies ExxonMobil and Chevron, with research set to begin in early 2027.
He urged Europe to adopt a more realistic energy transition that includes gas alongside renewable sources.
Mr. Mitsotakis said the crisis involving Iran could also accelerate the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, or IMEC, by pushing Gulf states and Israel toward closer cooperation if there is progress on a lasting solution in Gaza.
He said he was looking forward to Mr. Trump’s visit and predicted the president “will have a very good time” in Greece, as the two countries expand cooperation in defense and the economy.
