Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis took to TikTok this week to announce the rollout of the government’s new rent reimbursement program, confirming that nearly 900,000 tenants will see payments deposited directly into their bank accounts.
In the video, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that the initiative, which covers one full month's rent for eligible beneficiaries, is a permanent measure made possible by Greece's improving economic indicators.
"Starting today, almost 900,000 renters will see one full month’s rent returned to their bank accounts," Mr. Mitsotakis said.
Under the program, eligible tenants will receive a base rebate of up to €800, with an additional €50 provided for each dependent child. For families supporting children in student housing, the reimbursement can reach as high as €1,600, depending on the number of students and rental costs.
The prime minister urged all tenants to declare their actual rental payments to tax authorities to ensure they receive the full compensation owed.Acknowledging the pressure of high living costs, Mr. Mitsotakis framed the subsidy as a necessary intervention for the younger generation.
"Housing affordability remains a major challenge," Mr. Mitsotakis noted. "This is the least we can do. We are making every possible effort to support all citizens, especially those who need it most."
The reimbursement scheme is part of a broader €2.5 billion relief package that also includes pension increases and wage boosts aimed at easing the burden of inflation on Greek households
