Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced a targeted cabinet reshuffle, elevating a wave of next-generation lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party to key economic, transport and foreign policy portfolios ahead of the 2027 general elections.
George Kotsiras, a 42-year-old legal scholar specializing in European law, was named Alternate Minister of Transport, succeeding Konstantinos Kyranakis, who has been nominated as General Secretary of New Democracy’s Political Committee.
Mr. Kotsiras will oversee critical infrastructure modernization.
Dimitris Markopoulos, a 51-year-old financial journalist and lawmaker, will become Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, with a mandate to oversee tax policy.
Marilena Soukouli, a civil engineer and lawmaker from Corinthia since 2019, was appointed Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, filling the vacancy left by the late Nikos Tagaras.
Tassos Chatzivasiliou, 44, an assistant professor of international relations and the party’s international secretary, was named Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs.
Mr. Chatzivasiliou will lead geopolitical strategy as Greece prepares for its upcoming European Union presidency.
Government Spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, who remains in his post after a successful tenure, said the new ministers will be sworn in on Friday, before President Konstantinos Tasoulas. Stratos Simopoulos will take over as New Democracy’s parliamentary spokesperson, replacing Mr. Markopoulos.
The reshuffle signals Mr. Mitsotakis’ effort to refresh his team with younger figures while maintaining continuity in key roles ahead of the next election cycle.
