Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ahead of the European Council summit, addressing a recent diplomatic episode in which an uncrewed Ukrainian naval drone washed up in Greek waters even as he reaffirmed Athens's continued support for Kyiv.
Mr. Mitsotakis raised the May incident, in which a stray Ukrainian military sea drone was found in a cave near Lefkada, an episode for which Kyiv has already issued a formal apology.
He stressed the need to prevent military hardware from spilling beyond active combat zones, even as he reiterated Greece's steady backing for Ukraine against Russian aggression.
On regional security, Mr. Mitsotakis welcomed the newly finalized U.S.-Iran agreement, saying Greece consistently favors diplomatic de-escalation, and called restoring unhindered navigation through the Strait of Hormuz a critical global priority.
He said the resulting drop in international crude prices must be passed on swiftly to consumers at the pump.
On the summit's economic agenda, Mr. Mitsotakis pledged Greece would push hard to protect funding for Cohesion Policy, the Common Agricultural Policy and the newly proposed EU Competitiveness Fund — all priorities for Athens as negotiations begin on the bloc's next long-term budget.
