Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced plans for the possible creation of a new, dedicated Ministry of Research and Development that would also oversee higher education, government sources confirmed.
Speaking at the Bio3 Forum 2025, Mr. Mitsotakis said the goal is to unify Greece's research ecosystem and close the innovation gap with other European countries.
The new ministry would be established within two years of the next election.
He advocated for a permanent research funding allocation in the national budget, which would be administered through a strict, merit-based evaluation process to ensure transparency and provide researchers with clear visibility on available resources.
Mr. Mitsotakis also highlighted the growing link between scientific research and national security, pointing to the new Hellenic Center for Defence Innovation (HCDI) as an institution capable of rapidly funding innovative defense projects.
He also stressed the importance of attracting talented members of the Greek diaspora back to the country to contribute to the fields of artificial intelligence and biosciences.
