During a visit to Crete on Friday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also went to the Plakiotissa dam in Messara, a project that had remained stalled for many years and whose construction was recently finished as part of a broader strategy for the completion of important water-management infrastructure.

"This project started in 2007 and I am very happy that during our time the main dam was completed and we have now secured funding to proceed directly to the tendering of the networks, so that we can irrigate about 3,000 hectares of productive Cretan land," he said.

He added that "we attach great importance, with the ministries involved, to completing a series of unfinished large irrigation projects located throughout the country, because it is really a shame that the Greek taxpayer has spent millions of euros yet farmers are waiting for water and these projects are half-finished."

Kyriakos Mitsotakis also stressed that a comprehensive study on water management in Crete is being launched.
