Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has pledged to replace all vehicles on the remote Aegean island of Agathonisi with electric ones free of charge, proposing to transform it into Greece's first fully electric-powered island.
Speaking to residents, Mr. Mitsotakis said he discussed the plan with the local mayor, offering to replace both municipal and privately owned vehicles at no cost, provided the necessary charging infrastructure could be built.
"I would be absolutely willing to replace all your vehicles free of charge, with electric vehicles," he said.
The prime minister also touted Greece's success in reducing migration flows to the eastern Aegean islands, saying his government had pushed the European Union to shift its approach to migration since 2019.
"With persistence, effort and coordination across all state authorities, and significant pressure on Europe, we have managed to significantly reduce flows from the east to the islands of the eastern Aegean," he said.
Mr. Mitsotakis committed personally to rebuilding the island's port according to residents' existing plans, calling it "the least we can do" to ensure safe and reliable ferry access.
He said the government would also examine special development incentives for Greece's smallest islands to support small-scale, low-impact tourism investment.
"My main priority is how we keep people on the island — especially families with children," he said.
The prime minister reiterated that Greece will hold elections in spring 2027, saying the government's task in the meantime is to resolve as many outstanding issues as possible.
He said Greece would push to include island-specific funding measures in the European Union's next long-term budget, and pledged to further mobilize private donors who have already supported development on the island, saying private funding can often move faster than state bureaucracy.
