Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York on Sept. 23 on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, government sources confirmed Thursday.
The meeting, which Mr. Mitsotakis had signaled was possible during a television interview on Wednesday, is a key step in the ongoing effort by both sides to de-escalate long-standing tensions in the Aegean.
In his interview, Mr. Mitsotakis dismissed the possibility of a "heated incident" between the two countries but cautioned against complacency.
He said that because there is a mutual "willingness to find time," he believes the meeting will happen despite their brief overlapping schedules in New York.
The agenda for the talks is being compiled, and the two leaders are expected to be joined by their respective foreign ministers and diplomatic advisers.
