Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will attend the funeral of renowned Greek musician Dionysis Savvopoulos on Saturday and is expected to deliver the eulogy, according to government sources.
The gesture reflects a special bond between the two men. Mr. Savvopoulos, who died Tuesday at age 81, was a prominent cultural figure who evolved from leftist roots to become a vocal supporter of Mr. Mitsotakis and his New Democracy party, often drawing criticism from his former political circles.
Known affectionately as “Nionios,” Mr. Savvopoulos rose to fame during the 1967-1974 military dictatorship.
In later years, he became a committed Europeanist. In the run-up to the 2023 elections, he publicly endorsed Mr. Mitsotakis, stating, “I know no one better… to serve” the need for political maturity.
The funeral service for Mr. Savvopoulos will take place Saturday at the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by burial at the First Cemetery of Athens.
The funeral will be held at public expense.
