Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said that Greece will recognize a Palestinian state at a time it deems right to advance a two-state solution, while simultaneously defending his government's close strategic relationship with Israel.
Speaking at his annual press conference at the Thessaloniki International Fair, Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that the alliance with Israel has not stopped his government from "harshly criticizing Israel about the way it is conducting its operation in Gaza."
"Greece will recognize the state of Palestine," Mr. Mitsotakis stated. "The question is the timing that we will choose as the right one, so as to provide an additional push for… a two-state solution."
He noted that Greece has called for an immediate ceasefire and has voiced its concern over the "unimaginable human pain and loss of human life" at the United Nations Security Council, where Athens currently holds a non-permanent seat.
