Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for the restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and urged a return to diplomatic solutions across the Middle East, speaking at the fifth Greece-Cyprus-Jordan trilateral summit as regional tensions continue to strain global shipping and security.
Addressing leaders in Amman at what he described as a critical moment for the Middle East and Gulf region, Mr. Mitsotakis praised Jordan's stabilizing role and said the three-way partnership sends a clear message of commitment to international law and peaceful coexistence.
He positioned Greece and Cyprus as a natural bridge between the Middle East, Gulf states and the European Union, arguing that Jordan's stability and prosperity are directly linked to Europe's own security and economic interests.
Athens supports a "360-degree" approach to regional engagement, he said, calling for deeper coordination in energy, investment, connectivity, defense, tourism and climate action.
On the broader conflict, Mr. Mitsotakis expressed cautious optimism following recent diplomatic contacts but stressed the need for sustained de-escalation.
He reaffirmed support for Lebanon's government and called for full respect of ceasefire agreements and stronger state sovereignty.
On Gaza, Mr. Mitsotakis said peace efforts must be accelerated, Palestinian Authority reforms supported, and the two-state solution upheld as the only viable path to lasting peace.
The Amman summit follows Mr. Mitsotakis's visit Tuesday to Abu Dhabi, where he became the first EU leader to visit the Gulf region following Iranian strikes on Emirati infrastructure — part of an intensive week of Middle East diplomacy by the Greek prime minister.
