Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has held talks with Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa with the two leaders discussing a prospective investment cooperation memorandum alongside regional security developments.
Mr. Mitsotakis welcomed King Hamad to Athens, calling the visit particularly meaningful given what he described as extremely turbulent times in the region.
He reaffirmed Greece's commitment to Bahrain's security and territorial integrity in light of recent months' developments, and said the two countries can do significantly more on bilateral investment despite progress made in recent years.
The leaders discussed a planned memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation aimed at expanding economic ties and creating new investment opportunities, alongside cooperation at the United Nations, where Greece currently holds a non-permanent seat on the Security Council through the end of 2026.
King Hamad thanked Mr. Mitsotakis for Greece's support, calling the country a genuine friend to Bahrain and the wider region for many years.
He pointed to shipping, ports, aviation, industry and tourism as sectors with significant room for expanded cooperation, and said a stable Greece benefits both Europe and the Gulf region given the country's position between the two.
King Hamad said he hoped Greece would help convey clarity to European partners regarding developments in the Gulf, and expressed confidence that matters there would develop favorably.
He said he looked forward to concrete follow-up from the visit through both countries' diplomatic missions.
The meeting comes as Mr. Mitsotakis prepares to travel to the United States next week for the U.N. General Assembly and meetings with major investors.
