Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, addressing the Economic Council Germany Conference on Tuesday evening while receiving the award for the government's reforms and the recovery of the Greek economy, stressed that this recognition belongs primarily to the Greek people.
Referring to the Greeks, Mitsotakis said, "They have endured great difficulties and sacrifices, but at the same time, the Greek people have shown courage by embracing change and, of course, demonstrated remarkable resilience".
On tax evasion, he said it was being tackled through the use of digital tools, and the additional revenue could be returned to citizens. The Greek premier pointed out that for 2024 the primary surplus was expected to be around 2% while it is now reaching 4.8%.
He added that "progress is primarily reflected in jobs. In the last 6 years we have created 500,000 new jobs in Greece, and I believe that this is the most important achievement of our economic policy," Mitsotakis said.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated Mitsotakis, noting that he rightfully received the award. "What has been achieved in your country is truly significant, and I sincerely congratulate you on these great successes in recent years", he said.
