Greece's deputy transport minister has publicly called on the state-owned Hellenic Railways (OSE) to withdraw its legal appeal against a court ruling that awarded compensation to families of victims of the deadly 2023 Tempi train disaster.
In a letter sent Friday, Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis urged the railway's management to respect the court's decision and "spare the grieving families further hardship." The deadline for OSE to file the appeal is Monday, Sept. 29.
A Greek appellate court in July ordered the railway to pay €800,000 in total compensation to the relatives of four victims in the first such ruling related to the tragedy, which killed 57 people.
While acknowledging the standard legal process, Mr. Kyranakis said he was making the request on behalf of the government to avoid causing additional distress to the families.
