Greece is drawing increased tourist interest from across Europe and North America despite rising airfare costs and household budget pressures linked to the Middle East conflict, with American arrivals up 37% in January and German travelers abandoning long-haul destinations in favor of Greek islands, according to Greece's National Tourism Organization.

Secretary General Andreas Fiorentinos chaired a videoconference with the heads of the organization's 14 overseas offices to assess the war's impact on tourism flows and map out promotional strategy for the coming season. The meeting's overall conclusion was that Greece's outlook remains positive despite the challenges, with growing interest in lesser-known destinations and new flight capacity being added to Crete, Kefalonia and the Peloponnese from June 6.

Market-by-market, the picture was broadly encouraging. The United Kingdom showed sustained momentum, with major carriers expanding Greek routes, though concern over household income was noted. Germany presented the strongest structural shift, with travelers canceling long-haul trips and pivoting to Greece as a safe family destination, including a measurable diversion from conflict-affected Middle Eastern tourism markets.

France showed positive sentiment reinforced by new connectivity, while Poland and Austria reported stable demand and no cancellations. Scandinavia is adding new flights and redirecting capacity from other destinations toward Greece. Australia flagged transit concerns through Middle Eastern hubs as its main worry, while China reported no significant concerns beyond rising ticket prices. Italy and France showed some wait-and-see caution.

The dominant concern across nearly all markets was rising fuel and airfare costs, which Mr. Fiorentinos acknowledged were directly compressing the discretionary spending power of European families.

"Greece continues to be an exceptionally attractive destination, with stable demand and growth prospects despite international challenges," Mr. Fiorentinos said following the meeting, pledging intensified promotion and connectivity as the tools to sustain momentum through the season.
