The family of singer Giorgos Mazonakis is demanding what they called exemplary punishment for the two doctors charged in his death, as relatives described the household as shattered by grief nearly a week after he died.
Speaking to Mega TV, Mr. Mazonakis's father addressed the mounting revelations in the case, saying nothing can bring his son back but that he trusts justice will run its course. He suggested his son might still be alive had broadcasters handled certain matters differently before his death, adding only that it is now too late.
Mr. Mazonakis's sister, Maria Mazonaki, said the family wants exemplary punishment for the doctors — "nothing else" — for what she called her brother's unjust death.
Addressing reports that the doctors saw warning indicators on the plasmapheresis machine and ignored them, Mrs. Mazonaki said she watched the footage herself and still cannot comprehend it, adding that she doesn't expect the doctors to be released now that their charges have been upgraded.
The singer's aunt described the family as shut away at their home in Marathon, in a deeply distressed psychological state, particularly Mr. Mazonakis's mother.
She said the family had spent nearly two years trying to help and support him before his death, and remains unable to process the shock, adding that she had come to check on them and bring some comfort.
Mr. Mazonakis, 54, died last Wednesday after suffering cardiac arrest during an unlicensed plasmapheresis procedure at a private Athens clinic.
