Bonhams will showcase two centuries of Greek art history in its 47th Greek Sale auction on Nov. 19, featuring major works by modern masters Giannis Tsarouchis and Giannis Moralis.
A highlight of the sale, organized by Art Expertise, is Mr. Tsarouchis's Palm Leaves and Small Flags (1949), estimated at €400,000-€600,000.
Considered a crucial work from the artist's Esatzides series and originating from the renowned collection of Alexandros Iolas, the painting reflects Mr. Tsarouchis's unique blend of ancient Greek, Byzantine, and modern influences.
Another top lot is Funeral (1971) by Mr. Moralis, estimated at €200,000-€300,000. One of Greece's most sought-after artists, Mr. Moralis presented this minimalist geometric composition, balancing constructivist aesthetics with profound sensitivity, at a major 1972 Athens exhibition.
The auction also includes significant works by Giorgos Bouzianis, Nikos Engonopoulos, and the folk painter Theofilos Chatzimichail, whose monumental The Victory of the Greeks at Karpenisi is estimated at €120,000-€180,000.
The sale underscores the depth and international appeal of modern Greek art.
