Greece’s largest bridge project, the Flyover in Thessaloniki, is steadily taking shape and remains on track for completion by May 2027, government officials confirmed this week.
The massive overpass, officially known as T9, is a central component of the upgrade to Thessaloniki’s ring road and is designed to dramatically ease traffic congestion in the northern Greek city.
When completed, it will stretch 4 kilometers in length and 22 meters in width, surpassing the Rio–Antirrio Bridge as the country's longest structure of its kind.
The Flyover will enable drivers to bypass urban traffic, providing faster and safer access to key destinations such as the PATHE highway, Egnatia Odos, Macedonia Airport, and the Halkidiki region. The elevated roadway is expected to double current traffic capacity on the regional road, handling up to 10,000 vehicles per hour compared to the current 5,000.
Construction on the project, which began under a €478 million contract signed in December 2022, was highlighted on Monday during a session of the Government Council for Economic Policy, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas presented the latest updates, confirming the project remains on schedule.
Construction has already reached a visible milestone with the installation of a bright orange movable formwork — a hydraulically operated metal scaffold used for segmental concrete casting along the bridge’s piers.
Officials stated that the Flyover is also expected to contribute to improved road safety, reduced inner-city vehicle volume, environmental benefits from lower emissions, and noise mitigation through new sound barriers in residential areas.
With the Flyover poised to redefine urban mobility in Greece’s second-largest city, its completion is anticipated to be a landmark moment in Thessaloniki’s modernization efforts.
