A large fire broke out at a recycling facility in the Omorfochori area of Larissa, prompting authorities to issue a 112 emergency alert urging nearby residents to remain indoors with doors and windows closed.
The fire is burning uncontrolled within the facility grounds, and firefighters are working to contain it within the site's perimeter, given the presence of other businesses in close proximity, the fire department said.
Reinforcements have been deployed to the scene, with 35 firefighters and 15 vehicles currently battling the blaze, supported by water tankers from the Municipality of Kileler and the Region of Thessaly.
Fire officials said the blaze has developed a heavy thermal load and crews are making significant efforts to bring it under control. Containment is expected to take hours due to the large volume of combustible material at the site, with accumulated smoke complicating firefighting efforts. There have also been reports of explosions during the incident.
Larissa's Fire Investigation Unit for Arson-Related Crimes is heading to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
Authorities have not yet released information on injuries or the extent of damage. The situation remains active, with firefighting operations ongoing.
