Tens of thousands of travelers are flocking to Greece's islands for the major Assumption Day holiday on Friday, causing heavy traffic congestion at the country's main ports and on national highways.
The Port of Piraeus, the main gateway from Athens to the Aegean islands, is experiencing its busiest period of the summer.
On Friday alone, 62 ferries are scheduled to depart from Piraeus, with dozens more leaving from the nearby ports of Rafina and Lavrio.
Passenger numbers have soared in the days leading up to the Aug. 15 national holiday.
On Wednesday, more than 38,000 people departed from the three main Attica ports.
Ferry companies have added extra sailings to meet the high demand, and the Hellenic Coast Guard is on high alert to ensure passenger safety and smooth operations.
Authorities have also implemented special road safety measures and adjusted public transport schedules.
