A 60-year-old man has been stabbed to death after a violent dispute with his roommate in the village of Kalythies on the island of Rhodes, according to police.

Authorities said emergency crews rushed to the home shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday and found the victim badly wounded.

He was taken alive to a local hospital but died soon after arrival.

Initial reports from state media said the victim and the suspect were friends who shared the residence, though neighbors described a relationship marked by frequent tension. Investigators are examining whether alcohol played a role in the confrontation.

The suspect has not been publicly identified. Police said he has a history of severe mental illness and had previously been treated at the Leros psychiatric hospital. The motive remains unclear.

Officers from the Rhodes Security Sub-division are leading the investigation, and forensic teams were still processing the scene late Monday.

The suspect remains in custody, while prosecutors are expected to review the case on Tuesday.

The killing has shocked the local community in Kalythies, a quiet village better known for its residential streets than violent crime. Investigators are now trying to piece together the events that led to the fatal argument.
