Police on Crete have arrested a 23-year-old man, suspecting him of planting the bomb that allegedly triggered a deadly vendetta shooting in the village of Vorizia earlier this month.
The arrest marks a major development in the Nov. 1 shooting, which left two people dead and several others injured, escalating a long-standing local feud.
Police sources said the 23-year-old suspect is a relative of Fanouris Kargakis, the 39-year-old man killed in the Nov. 1 shooting.
The suspect was reportedly identified from visual evidence that showed him planting an explosive device at the home of the rival Frangiadakis family, an act authorities believe was the catalyst for the subsequent fatal shootout.
Mr. Kargakis was killed in the ensuing gunfire, along with a 56-year-old woman who was caught in the crossfire.
The suspect was located in Vorizia on Wednesday afternoon and taken into custody.
His arrest follows that of two other men, aged 43 and 48, who were detained on Monday.
Police said these two men are also relatives of Mr. Kargakis and were identified from footage related to the shooting incident itself.
Defense lawyers said the 43-year-old suspect exercised his right to remain silent, while the 48-year-old submitted a written statement denying any involvement.
