A 57-year-old foreign national has confessed to setting four separate fires in Mytilene last Friday, including a blaze that destroyed a truck loaded with hay, telling investigators his primary motive was revenge, authorities said.
The suspect was identified and apprehended by a special unit of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes. During his interrogation, he admitted to starting the fires on Aug. 15.
According to his statement, the man said he set the first two fires as an act of revenge against two tenants of nearby land.
He claimed the third fire was sparked during a moment of "irrationality" and the fourth was an attempt to mislead investigators.
One of the blazes completely destroyed a truck carrying approximately 400 bales of hay.
A case file is being submitted to a prosecutor, and an arrest warrant is expected to be issued following his formal questioning.
