Three foreign nationals have been charged with homicide after a 36-year-old man was beaten to death with metal pipes and a wooden plank at his home near Marathon, in what police believe was a premeditated attack rooted in a love triangle, authorities have said.
The suspects — a 31-year-old woman, her 33-year-old current partner and his 40-year-old brother — were arrested following a targeted investigation by the Marathon Police Department. All three are foreign nationals employed in local businesses. Investigators say the motive stems from a personal dispute between the victim and the female suspect, who were reportedly in a recent relationship.
The attack occurred on April 25 when the assailants ambushed the victim at his residence, inflicting severe cranial trauma and multiple bodily injuries.
He was rushed to hospital but died from his wounds two days later on April 27.
Officers identified the suspects through security camera footage and witness testimony. Police say they are still searching for two additional unidentified men believed to have participated in the assault.
The three detainees were brought before the Athens Public Prosecutor and face formal homicide charges.
They were granted a continuance to prepare their testimony before an investigating magistrate and remain in custody pending the conclusion of the preliminary hearing.
The killing has unsettled the Marathon community, a coastal area northeast of Athens better known as a tourist and residential enclave than a site of violent crime. Authorities gave no indication of the nationalities of those involved.
