More than 5,000 lightning strikes have been recorded across Greece, with authorities saying the electrical storms likely sparked at least two new wildfires in the regions of Arcadia and Thesprotia.
The Meteo weather service reported that 5,208 lightning strikes hit land and another 96 struck the sea by Monday evening.
The storms also brought heavy rainfall to parts of central and northern Greece.
Authorities said lightning was the probable cause of new wildfires in Megalopolis, Arcadia, and in Filiates, Thesprotia.
Firefighting forces, supported by water-dropping aircraft, were dispatched to both locations. Neither fire was reported to be threatening residential areas.
The new blazes were part of a total of 54 wildfires that broke out nationwide in a 24-hour period. While 40 were quickly contained, 14 remained active on Monday evening.
