A Greek court has sentenced a 35-year-old man to life in prison for the July 2025 shooting of Polish economist Przemyslaw Jeziorski in an Athens suburb.
Prosecutors deemed the killing was planned by the victim's ex-wife.
Mr. Jeziorski, 43, a University of California, Berkeley professor, was shot on July 4, 2025 near his former wife's home, by a masked gunman. He had returned to Greece to see his children. Police said the 35-year-old, the ex-wife's partner, traveled to Athens from Nafplio while leaving his phone behind to create a false alibi.
The ex-wife, 43, an economist, was charged as the mastermind and denied involvement. She died by suicide in Korydallos women's prison in June while awaiting trial. Three other men were charged as accomplices.
After his arrest, the convicted man took full blame, saying he acted alone.
"I organized everything," he reportedly told police, saying he wanted to end her court fight with the professor and free "my family."
He said the victim behaved in a demeaning way and that he feared the professor would take the children abroad.
Investigators said the couple's divorce was bitter, with disputes over the children and over finances tied to companies in the United States, and that the plan emerged after the ex-wife lost a court ruling.
