The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated mythological epic, “The Odyssey,” has leaked online, offering a first glimpse of Matt Damon in the lead role as the tormented king of Ithaca and a star-studded cast that includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway.
The teaser, which appeared on the internet this week, has ignited massive excitement among film fans. While some media outlets have speculated the release was an unintentional leak by Universal Pictures, the publicity has dramatically increased anticipation for the film, which is slated for a July 2026 release.
The trailer opens with a somber, epic tone, featuring a voiceover declaring: “Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. Kingdom without a king.
He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then somehow, somehow he won it.”
The dialogue is paired with a sweeping shot of a desolate beach and a broken idol of a horse, presumably a reference to the Trojan War.
The clip then cuts to a tense scene between Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, played by Mr. Holland, and a grizzled, unnamed character played by Jon Bernthal.
“I have to find out what happened to my father,” Mr. Holland’s Telemachus says.
Mr. Bernthal’s character replies ominously, “Who has a story about Odysseus? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned.”
The teaser culminates with a powerful shot of a man, presumably Mr. Damon’s Odysseus, adrift on a piece of driftwood in a vast, stormy sea.
The film boasts an all-star cast, with Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron also joining the ensemble.
The leak, whether accidental or a deliberate marketing move, has successfully set the stage for what is expected to be one of next summer’s biggest cinematic events.
