A 32-year-old Israeli tourist drowned at a popular beach in the Pelion region on Wednesday after entering the sea despite red flag warnings for dangerous swimming conditions, local authorities reported.
The incident occurred at Agioi Saranta beach, where strong winds had created powerful waves and currents. According to witnesses, the man went for a swim despite the clear warnings.
His friend reported him missing about ten minutes later. Shortly after, the man’s body was washed ashore onto nearby rocks.
Bystanders, including a group of doctors who were on the beach, immediately rushed to perform CPR and used a defibrillator in an attempt to revive him. Emergency services arrived promptly and transported him to the Zagora Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of swimming in rough seas. Greek authorities regularly issue warnings and raise red flags at beaches during the summer months when strong seasonal winds create hazardous conditions.
