The Athens prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation into statements by Yanis Varoufakis, leader of MERA25 (DIEM25 movement), on his personal experience with drugs.
Specifically, the preliminary investigation focuses on an interview during which Varoufakis said that while he was under the influence of drugs "it was an amazing experience," and on whether there was an instigation to the use of and advertising of drugs, as well as any other offense that might come up.
During the interview, Varoufakis had been asked whether he ever attended a rave party and tried drugs, which the former finance minister answered in the affirmative. As he said, "I am not Bill Clinton, who said 'I didn't inhale'. I am a bit boring, unfortunately. I have tried ecstasy once and it was an amazing experience, lasting two days. I had an incredible migraine, I do not know what they had given me, it was in Sydney, and I remember that it was a very special moment, in 1989. I remember dancing 15-16 hours like nothing mattered, but I then suffered for a week, and never took it again."
