A 24-year-old American climber injured on a remote cliffside in the Sikati area of Kalymnos on has been rescued in an operation that required rescuers to carry him down to the shoreline and evacuate him by private boat to a beach accessible by road, where paramedics transferred him to hospital.
The man was climbing with two companions when he was injured on the rock face.
The group used the emergency 112 number, allowing dispatchers to geolocate their position in the isolated terrain.
A seven-member team from the Kalymnos Volunteer Fire Station and the Kalymnos Volunteer Rescue Team reached him on foot, secured him on a stretcher and carried him to the nearest accessible shoreline.
A private vessel transported the group by sea to a beach on another part of the island, where a paramedic unit met them and took the climber to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately disclosed.
Kalymnos is one of the world's most visited sport climbing destinations, drawing thousands of international climbers annually to its limestone cliffs — and has seen a number of rescue operations this season as tourist activity on Greek islands picks up ahead of summer.
