Tennis star Novak Djokovic charmed the Athens crowd after a win on Tuesday night, greeting fans in Greek and declaring he feels "truly at home" after moving to the city two months ago.
After securing his place in the quarterfinals of the Hellenic Championship at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), the world No. 1 addressed the audience.
“Kalispera, Ellada. S’agapo. Ti kaneis? Kala, kala!” Mr. Djokovic said, which translates to, “Good evening,Greece. I love you. How are you? I’m good, good.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who laughed and admitted he is still learning the language, spoke affectionately about his new life in Greece.
“I really feel like I belong here,” Mr. Djokovic said.
“I moved here with my family two months ago, and I’ve been so excited about it. I’ve always loved Greece — all Serbs love Greece. Historically and culturally, we share so much.”
He praised the "amazing" hospitality, saying, "Athens now has a place in my heart, no doubt about it.”
Mr. Djokovic also commented on his victory against a player who had defeated him twice previously.
“I was more nervous than usual, but I drew a lot of energy from the crowd — thank you so much for that,” he said.
Mr. Djokovic’s move to Greece has stirred significant excitement among local fans, with thousands flocking to OAKA to watch him play.
