Greece is bracing for its first major heat wave of the season, with temperatures expected to climb to 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) by midweek, according to meteorologist Nikos Kanteres, writing for iefimerida.gr.

Monday's weather is expected to be generally clear, with temperatures actually dipping slightly before rising sharply later in the week.

"Temperatures will drop on Monday, but the real interest begins Wednesday, especially Thursday and Friday, intensifying further over the weekend and into Monday, when we'll see the peak of a hot air mass arriving from Libya and Tunisia," Mr. Kanteres said.

According to the National Meteorological Service (EMY), Monday will bring generally clear skies with scattered clouds over inland areas during midday and afternoon hours, bringing local rain or showers, mainly in mountainous regions, with isolated thunderstorms possible in eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

Winds will blow from the north at 4 to 5 on the Beaufort scale, reaching 6 to locally 7 at sea.

Temperatures will show little change Monday, reaching 35 to locally 36 degrees Celsius on the mainland and 33 to 34 degrees on the islands, with the Dodecanese seeing highs of up to 35 degrees.
